چکیده

The presence of mirrors modifies both the coherent coupling of an atom to a light mode and its spontaneous emission into the mode [1]. We study such cavity QED effects experimentally with single ions and optical cavities. We focus on two examples which are equally interesting as fundamental systems and for application in quantum information processing. (i) By retroreflecting the fluorescence of a single trapped Ba ion with a mirror 25 cm away, we observe inhibition and enhancement of the atom’s spontaneous emission. When two ions are trapped, the distant mirror creates superand subradiance. (ii) With a single trapped Ca ion we demonstrate coherent coupling of its narrow S1/2 –D5/2 “qubit” transition to amode of a high-finesse optical cavity. We also achieve deterministic coupling of the cavity standing wave to the ion’s vibrational state by controlling the ion’s position with nanometer-precision and selectively exciting vibrational state-changing transitions.

Novel laser machining of optical fibers for long cavities with low birefringence.

We present a novel method of machining optical fiber surfaces with a CO₂ laser for use in Fiber-based Fabry-Perot Cavities (FFPCs). Previously FFPCs were prone to large birefringence and limited to relatively short cavity lengths (≤ 200 μm). These characteristics hinder their use in some applications such as cavity quantum electrodynamics with trapped ions. We optimized the laser machining proc...

Coupling a single atomic quantum bit to a high finesse optical cavity.

The quadrupole S(1/2)-D(5/2) optical transition of a single trapped Ca+ ion, well suited for encoding a quantum bit of information, is coherently coupled to the standing wave field of a high finesse cavity. The coupling is verified by observing the ion's response to both spatial and temporal variations of the intracavity field. We also achieve deterministic coupling of the cavity mode to the io...

Cavity optomechanics with a trapped, interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

The dispersive interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity realizes the radiation pressure coupling Hamiltonian. In this system the role of the mechanical oscillator is played by a single condensate excitation mode that is selected by the cavity mode function. We study the effect of atomic s-wave collisions and show that it merely renormalizes p...

Quantum information processing and cavity QED experiments with trapped Ca+ ions

Single trapped Ca ions, stored in a linear Paul trap and laser–cooled to the ground state of their harmonic quantum motion are used for quantum information processing. As a demonstration, composite laser pulse sequences were used to implement phase gate and CNOT gate operation. For this, Stark shifts on the qubit transitions were precisely measured and compensated. With a single ion stored insi...

Photon-trap spectroscopy of mass-selected ions in an ion trap: optical absorption and magneto-optical effects.

A novel experimental technique has been developed to observe a trace of optical absorption of free mass-selected ions. The technique combines a linear radio-frequency ion trap with a high-finesse optical cavity to perform cavity ring-down spectroscopy (photon-trap spectroscopy for generality), where the storage lifetime of photons in the cavity provides a sensitivity high enough to probe the tr...
